Windows and delayed write failed
Was this information helpful? Yes No. Thank you! Any more feedback? The more you tell us the more we can help. Can you help us improve? Resolved my issue. Clear instructions.
Easy to follow. No jargon. Pictures helped. Didn't match my screen. Incorrect instructions. Too technical. Not enough information. Not enough pictures. All the files appeared to be on the drive, as I opened and closed the folders a few times checking that all the files were there. After being satisfied that all was well I deleted the files from one of the original HDD's and formatted the other. After a re-boot later on I got the "failed delayed write" blah blah and didn't think anything of it until I went to use the info off one of the drives Explorer shows both drives there, still full as only a couple of gig remains on each drive but no files can be seen.
Disc management shows no drives exist?? You can't delete files, add new ones or format the drives?? This is a fresh Win XP install no programs are installed yet, only drivers. Now C: occaisionally gets this same error, but if you try to save it again it works fine? Anyone know how to get my info back? That helped but the error is now intermittent. After running MS directx 9.
I have read this entire thread, read the note at the microsoft knowledge base, and while some problems seem to be software related, I really suspect that this error is being caused by a physical defect on the hard drive. I plan to replace the hard drive and see what happens. I will post results later. Max RE: Windows - Delayed Write Failed I'm have been testing this problem windows - write delayed failed on my machine since it had shown up recently. This is what I've found and it may not apply to some of the problems that you guys have.
In essence it uses more of the system RAM for caching. This is also the cause of my system getting the dreaded 'WDL' error upon boot up. I rebooted into safe mode and disabled the entry from the registry and the problem immediately went away. Reapplied, and as expected, the error returned upon reboot. I'm now running my Windows XP Pro without that tweak.
It doesn't seem to agree with a combination of the latest DirectX 9a and other recent critical windows update. Moses RE: Windows - Delayed Write Failed I would just like to confirm that the solution posted by Mozez31 on April 11, worked for me in solving the blasted "delayed write failed" problem.
Thanks Moses. As soon as I disabled the large cahce the DWFs went away. Whether the problem only appears on systems with multiple drives I cannot tell. My system does have more than one drive. It would nice to hear from others. After having this problem more than once, I am firmly convinced that the main cause of this error is hard drive defects bad clusters with the exception of the error occuring over a network.
The bigger the drive, the longer it is going to take. Type Y when it asks if you want it to run on reboot. You may have to run this up to three times. Also the "DisablePagingExecutive" tweak gave me the same errors. Very strange because my PC had been operating for over a year with these tweaks applied with no problmes whatsoever. I reinstalled XP pro, updated it with the latest patches and applied the registry tweaks, and the DWF errors appeared after a reboot.
So i must agree with Moze31 that the error is caused by a combination of the latest DirectX 9a and other recent critical windows update. I'm planning a fresh install of XP Pro without any updates and see if the errors are still occuring with these tweaks applied. I'll post results later. That will make chkdsk check the entire surface of the drive.
You may need to run it more than once. The chkdsk program has fixed this same problem for me. No DWF errors for the last 2 days. I've had it for weeks now, and can't get rid of it - Microsoft have washed their hands of me too But on an NT machine it requires that the machine be manually rebooted to a boot disk to run in Command Prompt. Since Win2K doesn't come with a boot disk and I needed to run it on my D drive, I approached it this way. I unzipped SpinRite and copied the file spinrite.
This enabled me to start the utility program from my C drive to scan my D drive. Next, go to the lower portion of the Computer Management window, right click on the gray box for each of your peripheral drives CD Rom, Zip drive, etc.
Close all the windows and the problem should by fixed. Gone - I hope! The IDE card that the disk was plugged into had configured the device as a UDMA Mode 6 device but either the device or the cable wasn't capable of this speed. Switching the device to UDMA Mode 5 solved the delayed write failure message and my machine is now far more stable. Oct 19, I Googled for solutions but nothing worked. This USB drive was working fine on my previous installation so I figured something new must have been installed.
I noticed that my USB drive was constantly being accessed even though I hadn't transferred any files. It's then that I thought maybe Diskeeper was for some reason accessing this drive. I opened Diskeeper and saw that Automatic Defragmentation was enabled. I disabled this and haven't had any problems with my drive since. I hope this helps you out. Let me know if it works. Roman Schwendtmayer. Jan 1, I too faced the same problem with a USB2. I tried many tips listed in MS knowledge base and other websites, including yours.
The machine is an R51 IBM laptop. When writing to a network share, a failure may cause the following event to be written to the event log:. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. This error can occur if there are pending cached writes to a file located on a remote network share and the connection to that file is unexpectedly terminated.
