Post-Admission Requirements Post-Admission Requirements The following items are applicable to the program and are time sensitive. This course is a 16 week clinical specialty practice that builds on the knowledge gained in the academic MRIT courses.

This course will emphasize: MRI safety guidelines and screening procedures Developing patient care skills within the MRI environment Enhance knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and pathology as visualized in MR images Collaborating with other health care professionals Performing MRI procedures.

Students are expected to become competent in all areas of MRI scanning. The theoretical component will challenge students to develop decision-making skills to optimize MRI sequences as they study MR imaging tradeoffs. Students will use this foundational skill in gaining IV injection competency during Specialty Practice. Clinical site preceptors will instruct students on the proper technique for IV insertions and help students achieve competency in IV set-up and delivery of contrast media for MRI exams.

Clinical Requirements Clinical site criteria must be met as a requirement of admission. Successful completion of program accredited through Accreditation Canada in a medical imaging discipline of diagnostic medical ultrasound, nuclear medicine technology, or radiological technology.

Applications from current Canadian entry level students in the final year of their degree program in Nuclear Medicine Technology or Radiological Technology may be considered, on condition of proof of successful completion prior to the beginning of classes in the MRI Certificate program. Studies may begin at the start of the next term following acceptance in the program. There are three 12 week online learning terms plus a full-time 16 week clinical experience. Fundamentals of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is an on line course that introduces students to the basic concepts in MRI. This course has nine modules that covers the physical principles of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The course starts with a historical overview of the development of MRI. It then introduces basic mathematical concepts used in MR. The course introduces the basic principles of MRI and goes on to cover them in greater detail in the modules that follow.

These include image weighting and contrast, special encoding and image formation, parameters and pulse sequences, instrumentation and equipment; and finally it introduces MRI safety, which is covered in more detail in a later course. This course is mandatory for all students before they can proceed further in the MRI program.

MRI artifacts in respect to patient and technology. Mechanisms to minimize or eliminate recognized artifacts. Quality assurance phantoms and tests used to evaluate image characteristics for an effective QC program. This course introduces key technologist controlled parameters and pulse sequences. The emphasis is placed on patient positioning, pulse sequence optimization, image quality, and the use of contrast media. This course also details relational anatomy as it pertains to MR Imaging as well as common pathologies.

The majority of the course focuses on equipment, patient positioning techniques, image optimization and common usage of contrast media. Indications for MR imaging are covered from the perspective of the best possible protocol sequences and imaging planes needed to outline pathology of the spine and musculoskeletal system.

Through online readings, activities, interactions and instructor support, this course focuses on MR imaging techniques, procedures and clinical applications of the head and neck. Techniques and tools are covered to provide the technologist the knowledge to perform duties that are common to all MRI procedures. Emphasis is placed on safe management of the patient in the MR environment. MRI Clinical Experience provides students the opportunity to integrate theoretical knowledge and concepts with clinical practice.

Students in this 4 month clinical experience will be provided the opportunity through hands on experience to develop skills in performing a variety of MRI studies. Safe care of the patient and self are key elements of this course. At the successful completion of this course, students will have achieved the competencies necessary for entry level practice as an MRI technologist.

Prerequisite s : Successful completion of all didactic MRI courses. The clinical experience is typically scheduled Mon - Fri during daytime hours.
